Causes of Kidney Stones:  More than half of kidney stones in patents are caused by calcium , usually in the form of calcium oxalate . Oxalate is a naturally occurring substance found in different foods, including some fruits, vegetables, as well as nuts and chocolate . Furthermore, even the liver produces oxalate. Thus, these dietary factors, high doses of vitamin D , intestinal bypass surgery, and various metabolic disorders can increase the concentration of calcium or oxalate in the urine, leading to the formation of a kidney stone .
