What Causes Yellow Fever?  Flavivirus causes Yellow Fever and is transmitted when an infected mosquito bites you. Mosquitoes become infected with the virus when they bite an infected human or monkey. The disease cannot be spread from one person to another.

Mosquitoes breed in tropical forests, humid and semi-humid environments, as well as in standing water. Increased contact between humans and infected mosquitoes, particularly in areas where people have not been vaccinated against Yellow Fever , can create small-scale epidemics.

Who is at Risk for Yellow Fever? Those who have not been vaccinated against Yellow Fever and who live in areas populated by infected mosquitoes are at risk. According to the World Health Organization, about 200,000 people are infected each year. Most cases occur in 32 countries in Africa, including Rwanda and Sierra Leone, and in 13 countries in Latin America, including:

  • Bolivia
  • Brazil
  • Colombia
  • Ecuador
  • Peru

Yellow Fever Treatment:  There are no specific medical treatments against the yellow fever virus. Usually, treatment aims to improve symptoms and in more severe cases, care is carried out in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), for replacement of blood lost in hemorrhages, dialysis for the affected kidneys and general control of complications. Due to the risk of the disease developing in a hemorrhagic way, it is important to avoid the use of aspirin.
