Acne is a chronic disease of the sebaceous glands of the skin, which leads to the development of comedones, also known as pimples. The most common form of manifestation of pimples is the excess production of the sebaceous glands, caused by the action of androgen hormones and testosterone.
During puberty, hormones trigger the sebaceous glands to grow and produce more sebum (oil). This excess oil can cause the pores to become clogged. A type of bacteria called Propionibacterium acnes, which normally lives on the skin, invades clogged pores and begins to grow, creating inflammation and irritation. The result is an inflamed follicle, where a pimple develops.
