Wilms  tumor , also known as nephroblastoma, is one such  cancer . Less than one in 10,000 children is affected by Wilms tumor in the United States. Approximately 500 children are newly diagnosed each year.

Symptoms of Wilms Tumor: The condition occurs most often in children with an average age of 3 to 4 years. Wilms tumor symptomsare similar to other childhood illnesses, so it’s important to see your doctor for an accurate diagnosis. Children with Wilms tumor may have the following symptoms:

Wilms Tumor Causes: It is unclear what exactly causes Wilms tumors . So far, researchers haven’t found clear links between Wilms’ tumor and environmental factors. These factors include drugs, chemicals, or infectious agents, both during the mother’s pregnancy and after birth.

Treatment for Wilms Tumor: Because this type of cancer  is so rare, children with Wilms tumors are usually treated by a team of doctors, including:

  • surgeons
  • Urologists or urinary tract specialists
  • Oncologists or cancer specialists

The main types of treatment are:

  • radiation therapy

Most children undergo a combination of treatments for Wilms Tumor . Surgery is usually the first treatment used for people in the United States. The purpose of the surgery is to remove the Wilms Tumor .

In some cases, Wilms Tumor  cannot be removed because it is too large, or the cancer  may have spread to both kidneys or blood vessels. If so, your doctors may first use chemotherapy or radiation therapy (or both) to try to shrink the tumor before surgery.
