Vaginismus – What it is, Symptoms and Treatments  of this condition. Also, when a woman has vaginismus , the muscles in her vagina squish or spasm when something is coming in, like a tampon or a penis . It may be mildly uncomfortable, or it may be painful. There are exercises a woman can do that can help, sometimes within weeks.

What is vaginismus: Vaginismus is a manifestation of common pain that affects a woman’s ability to have successful vaginal  intercourseand is a leading cause of unconsummated marriages.

Vaginismus Symptoms: Vaginismus symptoms varyfrom person to person and can include: 2

  • Painful intercourse (dyspareunia), described as burning, stinging, or tightness causing pain
  • Penetration is difficult or impossible
  • Long-term sexual pain with or without a known cause
  • Pain during tampon insertion
  • Pain during gynecological examination

Generalized muscle spasm or respiratory arrest while attempting sexual intercourse.
Vaginismus does not prevent people from becoming sexually aroused. However, symptoms can make people worry about intercourse , instill a desire to avoid sex, or vaginal penetration .

Possible Causes of Vaginismus: Vaginismus is a condition that can be caused by physical Stressors, Emotional Stressors or a combination of the two, and can become anticipatory. two

Emotional Vaginismus Triggers

  • Fear – of pain or pregnancy, for example
  • Anxiety – performance anxiety, guilt
  • Problems with a sexual partner – an abusive partner, feelings of vulnerability
  • Traumatic life events – rape, history of abuse
  • Childhood experiences – education, exposure to sexual images.

Vaginismus Treatment: Women with Vaginismus can exercise, in the privacy of their own home, to learn to control and relax the muscles around the vagina . The approach is called progressive desensitization, and the idea is to get comfortable with the insertion. First, do Kegel exercises by squeezing the same muscles you use to stop the flow of urine when you urinate:

  • Squeeze the muscles.
  • Hold for 2 to 10 seconds.
  • Relax your muscles.
  • Do about 20 Kegels at a time. You can do them as many times a day as you like.

After a few days, insert a finger, up to approximately the first joint of the joint, into the vagina while doing the exercises. It’s a good idea to cover your nails first and use a lubricating jelly. Or do the exercises in a bathtub, where water is a natural lubricant.

Treatments for Vaginismus: Surgery does not cure Vaginismus and may even make the condition worse. 2 Also, not treating the condition can make it worse, leading to a longer duration and increased intensity with muscle contraction. The good news is that Vaginismus is almost 100% curable.

Treatment for Vaginismus Usually includes:

  • Pelvic floor control exercises: including muscle contraction and relaxation activities (Kegel exercises) to improve control of the pelvic floor muscles
  • Insertion or dilation training: Supervised exercises using plastic dilators can help make a patient less sensitive to penetration
  • Education and Counseling: Information on the sexual anatomy and sexual response cycle , which helps patients understand pain and the processes their body is going through
  • Emotional Exercises: Allowing the patient to identify, express and resolve any emotional factors that may be contributing to their Vaginismus . The time it takes for Vaginismus to be successfully treated will vary depending on the individual. 1 If you have symptoms related to Vaginismus , speak to your doctor for evaluation.
