Cause of Epidermoid Cyst: Epidermoid  Cyst is usually caused by a buildup of keratin. Keratin is a naturally occurring protein in skin cells. Epidermoid cysts  develop when protein is trapped beneath the skin  because of a break in the skin  or hair follicle. Epidermoid  cysts  usually develop in response to skin trauma , HPV infection , acne, or excessive sun exposure. Epidermoid cysts  are more likely to develop in people with acne or other skin conditions .

Symptoms of Epidermoid Cyst:  The  Epidermoid Cyst  appears as a fixed, dome-shaped, firm or floating nodule, from a few millimeters to 5 centimeters in size, covered by normal, white, yellowish or dark brown skin . It may have a blackhead-like opening, which can smear a greasy white or yellow material and smell rancid.

Epidermoid cysts  most commonly appear on the face, scalp, behind the ear, neck, upper back or chest, shoulders, arms, scrotum, vagina, and lips. Most epidermoid cysts appear in adults. Signs of infection include redness, swelling and pain around the epidermoid cyst . In some cases, there may be a purulent discharge.

Complications of Epidermoid Cyst:  The main complications of  Epidermoid Cyst include:

  • Inflammation. Epidermoid  Cysts can become tender and swollen even if they are not infected.
  • Break. A broken cyst often leads to a boil-like abscess that requires immediate treatment.

Treatment of Epidermoid Cyst: Epidermoid  Cyst can be removed by surgical excision. Removal of the fatty content and wall of the Epidermoid Cyst  is necessary for the Epidermoid Cyst to heal. There is no known prevention or home treatment for Epidermoid Cyst . If you just squeeze an Epidermoid Cyst , it will likely recur in a few weeks or months.
