Neurofibromatosis – What is it, Causes and Treatments!

Neurofibromatosis – What it is, Causes and Treatments  that we should not ignore. Also,  Neurofibromatosis  is the general name for a number of genetic conditions that cause tumors to grow along your nerves. Tumors are bumps formed by a growth of cells .

In neurofibromatosis, the tumors are usually not cancerous (benign). Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is the most common type, affecting about one in 3,000 births. Neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2), which is much less common, has different symptoms and is caused by changes in different genes, so it is covered separately.

Neurofibromatosis, also known as Von Recklinghausen Disease, is a rare genetic disease that manifests itself around age 15 and causes abnormal growth of nerve tissue throughout the body, forming small external tumors called neurofibromas. Neurofibromatosis is usually benign and can be divided into two groups. So, check out now  Neurofibromatosis – What it is, Causes and Treatments:

Main Causes:  It is caused by a genetic mutation, which is a permanent change in the DNA sequence that makes up a gene. As a result, the growth of nerve tissue is not properly controlled. In half of all cases of Neurofibromatosis , the genetic mutationis passed from parent to child.

In other cases, the genetic mutation appears to develop spontaneously. Although genetic tests can be performed during pregnancy to see if your child will have Neurofibromatosis , most cases are diagnosed after birth from the characteristic symptoms.

Symptoms:   It is a condition you were born with, although some symptoms develop gradually over many years. The severity of the condition can vary considerably from person to person. In most cases of Neurofibromatosis , the skin is affected, causing symptoms such as:

  • Pale, coffee stains ( coffee au lait stains )
  • Mild, non-cancerous patches on or under the skin (neurofibromas)

Some health issues are often associated with Neurofibromatosis , such as learning disabilities. Less commonly, Neurofibromatosis  is associated with a type of cancer known as malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors .

Treatments:  Treatment involves regular monitoring and treating any problems as they occur. This may involve surgery to remove tumors and improve bone abnormalities, medication to manage secondary conditions such as high blood pressure, and therapy for behavioral problems.

In many cases, careful monitoring and treatment can help people with Neurofibromatosis  live full lives. However, there is a risk of developing serious problems such as certain types of cancer , which can reduce life expectancy in some people by up to 15 years.
