It can also be caused by using an intrauterine device (IUD), which is a form of birth control. The pain usually starts early in the menstrual cycle and lasts longer than  primary dysmenorrhea .

Symptoms of Menstrual Cramps:  Menstrual cramps are pain that characteristically starts with, or just before menstruation, progressively lessening in the first 72 hours.

The cramps  are intense and intermittent, tending to be located in the lower abdomen. In some women the pain may radiate to the back or lower limbs. Nausea , sweating, diarrhea , dizziness , headache, and tiredness can come along with cramping .
