Herpetic Stomatitis – What is it, Symptoms and Treatments!

Herpetic Stomatitis – What is it, Symptoms and Treatments of this disease. Also, Herpetic Stomatitis   is a pain or inflammation inside the mouth . The pain may be in the cheeks, gums , inside the lips, or on the tongue. The two main forms of stomatitis are Herpetic Stomatitis , also known as sore and aphthous stomatitis, also known as cancer pain.

Mouth sores and canker sores are two common types of Herpetic Stomatitis . Canker sores, or Herpetic Stomatitis , are not contagious. If you have mouth sores , identifying the type of sore is important so you know how to treat and prevent them from spreading.

Causes of Herpetic Stomatitis: A herpes simplex virus 1 infection causes stomach stopathy. It is most common in young children between the ages of 6 months and 5 years. People exposed to HSV-1 can develop mouth sores later in life as a result of the virus. HSV-1 is related to HSV-2, the virus that causes genital herpes, but it is not the same virus.

Herpetic Stomatitis can be a set of small pits or ulcers on the cheeks, gums , inside the lips or on the tongue. It is most common in young people, most often between 10 and 19 years of age. Herpetic Stomatitis is not caused by a virus and is not contagious. Instead, it is caused by oral hygiene problems or damage to the mucous membranes. Some causes include:

  • Dry tissues breathe through the mouth due to clogged nasal passages;
  • Minor wounds from dental work, accidental cheek bite or other injuries
  • Sharp toothed surfaces, dental appliances, dental prostheses or retainers;
  • Celiac disease;
  • Food sensitivity to strawberries, citrus fruits, coffee, chocolate, eggs, cheese or nuts;
  • Allergic response to certain bacteria in the mouth ;
  • Inflammatory bowel diseases;
  • Autoimmune diseases that attack cells in the mouth ;
  • HIV/AIDS;
  • Weakened immune system;
  • Deficiency in vitamin B-12, folic acid, iron or zinc;
  • Certain medications;
  • Stress;
  • Candida albicans infection .

Symptoms of Herpetic Stomatitis: Herpetic Stomatitis is usually indicated by multiple blisters that occur on:

  • gums
  • Palate
  • Cheeks
  • Tongue
  • lip edge

Blisters can become difficult or painful to eat, drink, or swallow. Dehydration is a risk, as drinking becomes very uncomfortable. Drooling, pain, and swollen gums may also occur . And cold sores can also cause irritability.

If your child is irritable and has trouble eating or drinking, this could be a sign that they are about to develop Herpetic Stomatitis . Fever is another symptom of HSV-1 infection, and it can reach 40°C (104°F) .

Diagnoses of Herpetic Stomatitis: Initially, the diagnosis of Herpetic Stomatitis takes into account the appearance and location of the lesions and symptoms. In some cases, laboratory tests may be necessary to identify the type of virus or determine other possible causes of the disease.

Establishing the differential diagnosis is extremely important to conduct appropriate treatment.

Herpetic Stomatitis Treatments: Treatment will depend on the type of stomatitis you have. The antiviral drug acyclovir (Zovirax) can treat Herpetic Stomatitis . Taking this medication can shorten the length of the infection .

Dehydration is a risk for young children, so make sure they drink plenty of fluids. A liquid diet of non-acidic foods and drinks is recommended. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) can be used to reduce pain and fever.

For severe pain, topical lidocaine (AneCream, RectiCare, LMX 4, LMX 5, RectaSmoothe) can be used. Lidocaine numbs the mouth , so it can cause problems with swallowing, burns, or strangulation. It must be used with care.

An HSV -1 infection can become an eye infection called herpetic keratoconjunctivitis. This is a serious complication that can lead to blindness. Seek treatment immediately if you experience eye pain, blurred vision, and eye discharge.
