Hairy Black Tongue – Causes, Symptoms and Treatments that we should not ignore. In addition,  hairy black tongue, also popularly known as hairy tongue , is an oral pathology that has a very embarrassing appearance, where it has a hairy and black appearance on the dorsal surface of the tongue .

In fact, the hairy black tongue  does not have hair on the tongue, but small bumps called papillae, which grow throughout life. In some people the papillae end up growing more than normal, making them long giving a fur appearance.

These papillae, due to their exaggerated growth, end up being more prone to harbor bacteria and/or fungi that after their growth leave the tongue with a black color and can also turn gray or brown.

Causes of Black Hairy Tongue:  The definitive causes of Black Hairy Tongue have not yet been identified, it is believed that the colonization of bacteria on the tongue causes it to stimulate the exaggerated growth of the papillae. Some factors are associated, which are:

  • Smoking cigarettes ;
  • Excessive coffee ;
  • Some antibiotics;
  • Poor oral hygiene ;
  • Some medications;
  • Decreased production of saliva;
  • Radiotherapy;
  • Soft diet;
  • Excessive use of mouthwash;
  • Breathe through the mouth;

Hairy Black Tongue Signs and Symptoms:  The classic signs and symptoms of hairy black tongue is the appearance of a black spot on the surface of the back of the tongue, but it can also present a velvety sensation in the mouth due to the growth of the papillae, Halitosis ( bad breath ), metallic taste, choking sensation, nausea and taste change.

Treatment for Black Hairy Tongue:  Although the pathology appears to be serious, it is considered harmless and temporary, it is usually just to maintain good oral hygiene by brushing well or teeth and tongue and avoid factors that contribute to the appearance of the pathology. However, it is recommended to seek a doctor and / or dentist for guidance and or proof of diagnosis.

Although this condition is not a very serious condition or disease, it can be easily avoided by exercising some basic dental care because, as they say, prevention is always better than life-threatening cures.

There is a simple technique that is an effective remedy, to get rid of black tongue. Take small pieces of thin pineapple slices and slowly absorb the juice from each piece of pineapple , placing it on the back of the tongue.

Put it there for about 40 seconds and then chew it. Repeat the process with the remaining slices twice a day for a week. It is an effective way to cure black tongue.

As I’ve said several times, this is not a serious medical condition so there’s nothing to worry about. Also, lifestyle management is the best way to cure and prevent.
