What is Facial Flushing: Erythrophobia, better known as facial flushing , is a sudden redness of the face, which occurs spontaneously, without any apparent cause, or in response to stressful stimuli. The condition is caused by over-activity of the sympathetic nervous system. This is part of the involuntary central nervous system, so it is not possible to voluntarily control or stop it. Causes of Facial Flushing: Facial flushing means that there has been an intense increase in blood flow in these places, due to the dilation of blood vessels. The most common causes of facial flushing are:
- Heat
- Physical exercises
- Menopause
- Emotional factors, such as moments of anxiety
- alcohol intake
- Use of some medications (tamoxifen, nicotinic acid, hydralazine, sildenafil, chlorpropamide, and others) and food additives, such as monosodium glutamate.
Facial flushing can also be part of the symptoms of rosacea, a very common skin condition . Other skin conditions also cause redness , but it lasts longer, such as seborrheic dermatitis, lupus erythematosus of the face and others.
