Domperidone – Are There Any Side Effects? how to use?

Domperidone ,  also known as Motilium , is a drug that has the property of accelerating stomach emptying. Thus, it is useful for the treatment of nausea, stomach pain , gastric distention and gastroesophageal reflux.

Despite being a safe drug with low potential to cause adverse effects, DOMPERIDONE may be associated with an increased risk of serious cardiac arrhythmias, particularly when daily doses above 30 mg are used or when the drug is used in patients with more of 60 years.

DOMPERIDONE can be found in pharmacies in its generic form or under its various trade names. As already mentioned, the most famous trade name of DOMPERIDONE is Motilium,  the other trade names are:

Domperidone side effects :

Stop taking DOMPERIDONE and talk to your doctor right away if you experience any of the reactions below.

Commons:

  • In addition, psychiatric: depression, anxiety , decreased libido/loss of libido;
  • nervous system: headache, drowsiness , akathisia;
  • In addition, gastrointestinal: diarrhea ;
  • skin and subcutaneous tissue: rash , itching;
  • In addition, reproductive and breast system: breast enlargement/gynecomastia, breast tenderness to touch, galactorrhea, amenorrhea , irregular menstruation ,
  • lactation disorders;
  • In addition, general and conditions at the place of administration: asthenia.

Very Rare:

  • Immune System: anaphylactic reaction (including anaphylactic shock);
  • In addition, psychiatric: agitation, nervousness ;
  • Nervous System: dizziness, extrapyramidal disorders, convulsion ;
  • In addition, cardiac: sudden cardiac death , severe ventricular arrhythmia;
  • Skin and subcutaneous tissue: angioedema;
  • Also, Renal and urinary disorders: urinary retention .

Contraindications of  DOMPERIDONE:

This medicine is contraindicated if you:

  • In addition, presenting sensitivity (allergy) to any of its components;
  • Suffer from prolactinoma, a disease of the pituitary;
  • Also, you have severe stomach pains or persistent dark stools;
  • You have liver (liver) disease;
  • In addition, you are using certain drugs that slow down the metabolism (the breakdown) of other drugs in the body and that may also affect your heart rhythm, and

How to use:

Adults:

Generally, the recommended dose is 10 mg or 10 ml of the suspension taken 3 times a day, 15 to 30 minutes before meals. If necessary, an additional 10 mg can also be taken at bedtime.

Children:

The recommended dose is 2.5 ml of suspension per 10 kg of weight, administered 3 times a day, 30 minutes before meals. If necessary, an additional 2.4 mg can also be taken for every 1 kg of weight at bedtime.
