Churg-Strauss Syndrome – What it is, Symptoms and Treatments that we should be informed about. Furthermore,  Churg-Strauss syndrome (CSS) is an extremely rare disease – there are only 2 to 5 cases per year per million inhabitants. Churg-Strauss Syndrome  is  inflammation that occurs in certain types of cells in the blood or tissues.

This inflammation causes damage to organs and systems – they are most often involved in the lungs, nose, sinuses, skin, joints, nerves, gastrointestinal tract, heart and kidneys. An important feature of Churg-Strauss Syndrome is that all patients had a history of asthma and/or allergies.

Churg-Strauss syndrome (CSS) easily affects men and women, aged between 30 and 60 years on average, but it can affect children in the same way, and is characterized by abnormally high levels of eosinophil blood cells. Churg-Strauss Syndrome also known as allergic granuloma cough and was first identified by Jacob Churg and Lotte Strauss in 1951 and was given the name of the disease.

Main Symptoms of Churg-Strauss Syndrome:  It was noticed that this disease is more common in patients with asthma or allergies. The symptoms of this disease can be very variable depending on each organ affected. Among the common symptoms and characteristics that are most recorded:

• bronchial asthma
• The loss of smell
• Chest pain without an affected heart and/or lungs
• pulmonary infiltrations
• Malaise, discomfort in general.
• Fever
• Numbness and tingling in hands and feet with possible loss of sensation (occurs when neurological involvement is present)
• Abdominal pain
• Skin rashes and a reddish tinge over it

Asthma is certainly one of the cardinal features of Churg-Strauss Syndrome (CSS). Asthma symptoms can start long before vasculitis starts.
Other symptoms or signs would include the appearance of nasal polyps, allergic rhinitis and, later, the disease in any development, and bringing about the presence of eosinophils (excessive number of eosinophils in the blood or tissues).

Eosinophilic cells are a subtype of white blood cells that are normally found in the blood in small amounts (approximately 5% of the total white blood cell count). In Churg-Strauss Syndrome (CSS), the percentage of eosinophils can be as high as 60%.

Churg-Strauss Syndrome and its Stages:  The disease has three stages: Allergic, eosinophilic vasculitis, the first stage involves asthma , rhinitis and sinusitis . The second, abdominal pain, gastrointestinal bleeding, fatigue. The third, weight loss, weakness, swelling, inflammation and swollen lymph nodes. The physician should be informed if new symptoms begin.

Diagnosed with Churg-Strauss Syndrome:  This exam is performed to detect the affected organs and to rule out other health problems that may have a similar appearance.

Physical Examination:  With the exception of fever, physical findings in Churg-Strauss Syndrome are specific to participate in organ system involvement. Pulmonary involvement is the most prominent. The antecedents of the involvement of pneumonitis should be evaluated so that there is no search for evidence of systematic vasculitis elsewhere.

Asthma and eosinophilia additions are a dermatopulmonary renal syndrome is a hallmark of a disease. Mononeuritis multiplies is only common when it looks like Churg-Strauss Syndrome.

Urine Tests:  It is necessary to perform the urine test to detect the presence of red blood cells and excess protein

Other Methods To Diagnose The Syndrome:  X-rays such as CT, blood tests and reviewing the patient’s medical history.
