Celiac Disease – Causes, Symptoms and Treatments!

Celiac Disease – Causes, Symptoms and Treatments  we should know. Furthermore,  celiac disease has become more well-known in recent years as people embrace the “gluten-free diet” craze. But there is a percentage of the population that is severely affected by a gluten sensitivity.

Gluten is found in wheat , barley and rye . And this disease is actually an immune reaction to gluten — causing serious intestinal damage, weight loss, malnutrition, and stomach upset. There is no cure for celiac disease, but people who have it can manage their symptoms by sticking to a gluten-free diet.

Main Causes of Celiac Disease:  Since celiac disease is an immune disease, it has to do with how the immune system reacts to gluten. When someone has celiac disease, the immune system forms antibodies against gluten, which then attacks the essential lining of the gut. This causes inflammation and damages the lining of the intestine – causing the person to not be able to absorb the proper nutrients they need.

Main Symptoms of Celiac Disease:  This immune system attack causes the following symptoms:

  • Digestive problems like abdominal bloating, pain, gas, diarrhea , pale stools, and weight loss.
  • A severe skin rash called dermatitis herpetiformis
  • Iron deficiency
  • Musculoskeletal problems, such as muscle cramps, joint cramps, and bone pain
  • Growth problems and stunting for children
  • seizures
  • Tingling sensation in the legs
  • mouth sores
  • Missed menstrual periods

Celiacs can also lead to other medical conditions like:

  • Osteoporosis , because the person has trouble absorbing enough calcium and vitamin D.
  • miscarriage or infertility
  • birth defects
  • seizures
  • Growth problems in children because they don’t absorb enough nutrients.
  • Bowel cancer, although this is very rare
  • People who suffer from celiac disease may have other autoimmune diseases, including:
  • thyroid disease
  • type 1 diabetes
  • Lupus
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Sjögren’s syndrome, which is a disease that causes insufficient production of moisture by the glands.

Celiac Disease Treatment:  In order to reduce inflammation so your bowels can start working properly again, it is important to take the following out of your diet:

You cannot self-diagnose celiac disease, so it’s important to talk to your doctor about your symptoms so they can help you figure out what the problem is. Once diagnosed, your doctor will talk to you about your new diet, and may even refer you to a nutritionist to help with the new transition.
