Causes of Amebiasis: Amebiasis is caused by the parasite Entamoeba histolytica, which enters the body mainly through ingestion of contaminated food or water. This parasite can also enter the body through direct contact with fecal matter.

Entamoeba histolytica releases cysts, which are a relatively inactive form of the parasite and can live for several months in the environment in which they were deposited, usually in feces, soil, and water. They can also be transmitted by food handlers and through unprotected sex .
Diagnosis of Amebiasis: The parasitological examination of feces (EPF) is used to identify cysts and trophozoites of the parasite. This test is performed by collecting three samples on alternate days. The correct collection of feces is important to avoid cross-contamination and false-negative results. Sera and exudates can also be used for diagnosis.
Prevention of Amebiasis: Several prevention measures can be adopted, including:
- provide basic sanitation for the entire population;
- use treated water for drinking whenever possible;
- wash hands before and after meals;
- wash fruits and vegetables well and leave them to soak in a solution of bleach and water (1 tablespoon of bleach for each
- liter of water)
- filter and boil (for at least 20 minutes) water from wells or rivers before drinking it;
- avoid contact with human feces;
- wash with plenty of soap and water if you have had contact with human feces.

Treatment for Amebiasis: For severe cases, one should remain at rest, using a diet rich in protein and with constant hydration. The medication normally used is Metronidazole for 10 days orally. If the parasite invades the tissues, treatment should cover all areas affected by the parasite. At the end of treatment, the stool should be examined again to make sure that the disease has passed.
