Bridelia – What is it, benefits and side effects!

Bridelia is the name of a plant genus The leaf, stem bark and root are used to make medicine. People consume the leaves, stem bark or root of Bridelia orally to prevent pregnancy, cause labor, malaria, AIDS/HIV, anemia , asthma , cancer, colic, cough , diabetes, diarrhea , enlarged spleen, gonorrhea, hernia, joint pain, abnormal or painful menstruation, stomach pain and other stomach problems; syphilis, thrush, to kill parasites, urinary tract infections, yellow fever , yellowish skin discoloration (jaundice), as an insecticide and as a strong laxative.

People also apply Bridelia to the skin for sores, to the scalp for headaches, and to the eyes for sore eyes. The plant can even reduce swelling, lessen pain, and lower fevers . It can also prevent the growth of infection -causing organisms . The plant may have similar effects to the female hormone estrogen . It may also have antioxidant effects .

Special precautions and warnings:

  1. Pregnancy and Breastfeeding:  The plant should not be used during pregnancy. There is concern that it could stimulate the uterus and cause labor. Avoid using. Not enough is known about the use of Bridelia  while breastfeeding. Stay on the safe side and avoid using.
  2. Bleeding Disorders: The plant can slow blood clotting . This can increase the risk of bleeding or bruising in people with bleeding disorders.
  3. Hormone-sensitive conditions such as breast cancer, uterine cancer, ovarian cancer , endometriosis, or uterine fibroids: The plant may have the same effects as the female hormone estrogen . If you have a problem that could be made worse by exposure to estrogen , do not use Bridelia .
  4. Low Blood Pressure:  Bridelia can lower blood pressure . Do not consume if you already have low blood pressure.
  5. Surgery: Bridelia can slow blood  clotting . In theory, it could cause extra bleeding or affect blood pressure control during and after surgery. Stop using it at least 2 weeks before a scheduled surgery.
