Carbonated water – what it is for, benefits and side effects!

With products that make it easy to make  carbonated water at home, many people are even replacing their regular water consumption with  a more bubbly variety. But wait, is sparkling water  healthy? Is carbonation bad for you? The short answer to both questions: It depends. Let’s dive into this fizzy drink and find out just how healthy it is!

What is carbonated water?

Carbonated water is a variation of water , which is a clear, colorless, odorless and tasteless liquid. Sparkling water is infused with carbon dioxide, which makes it sparkling or bubbly. The “glow” of sparkling water can occur naturally or man-made. In case you’re wondering what sparkling water is .

The most natural form of carbonated water is sparkling mineral water , which not only contains minerals naturally, but can also be naturally carbonated. This refreshing, effervescent liquid comes straight from the source: a natural mineral source. The glow can result from naturally occurring gases in water . However, not all sparkling mineral water is naturally sparkling, and many mineral water companies also add carbon dioxide to the water  to make it bubbly.

Is carbonated water healthy? 

This is a good question. As is the case with many foods and beverages, carbonated water can be healthy if you choose the right kind. The best variety is the mineral-rich kind, which is called sparkling mineral water . Many experts say it can be just as hydrating as regular water, however the bubbles can make it more difficult to swallow the whole variety.

If in doubt about carbonated water and soda, I would say don’t choose either! Opt for sparkling mineral water instead, because that way you’re not only consuming water , but valuable minerals as well. The type of water you should stay away from is one that contains artificial flavors, colors and/or additives.

1. Rich in minerals:

If you choose carbonated water , you can add a variety of minerals to your diet while quenching your thirst. Natural mineral waters can be defined as those “originating from an aquifer or underground reservoir, which spring from one or more natural sources or boreholes and have specific hygienic characteristics and, eventually, healthy properties”.

The US Food and Drug Administration also has its own definition, which is “water containing not less than 250 parts per million (ppm) of total dissolved solids (TDS), from a source in one or more boreholes or springs, derived from a geologically and physically protected underground source of water”.

2. Regulates blood sugar:

Mineral waters also often contain bicarbonate . Bicarbonate is found in the human body and helps maintain a healthy blood pH so it doesn’t become too acidic or too basic.

A study published in 2015 linked consumption of bicarbonate – rich mineral water  with improved glycemic control. The 19 healthy subjects in the study drank 500 milliliters of commercially available mineral water or bicarbonate – rich  mineral  water daily. Researchers observed that, compared to tap water drinkers, mineral water  drinkers had a significant decline in serum levels of glycol albumin. This is significant as glycolbumin levels are used as markers of glycemic control.

3. Healthier alternative:

If you’re drinking some diet soda, I’d much rather see you drinking carbonated water . As long as carbonated water  doesn’t have any unhealthy additives, it wins every time when compared to soda.

Soda is loaded with insulin-raising sugars or filled with extremely health-dangerous fake sugars like aspartame. Sugary drinks such as soda have been scientifically shown to increase the risk of heart disease, diabetes and other serious chronic conditions. Opting for unsweetened, unflavored mineral water is a much better choice than soda if you’re concerned about your health.

4. Helps with dyspepsia and constipation:

A UK scientific review published in 2014 looked at 20 different studies involving 902 individuals with a core neurological disorder such as Parkinson’s disease or a brain injury such as a stroke. People with these types of health issues are much more likely to experience constipation  compared to the general population.

This study made the interesting discovery that carbonated water can be helpful for stroke victims who suffer from constipation . Another study examined the effects of carbonated drinks on 21 patients with functional dyspepsia  and found that carbonated water  improved dyspepsia symptoms , as well as constipation and gallbladder emptying.

5. Soothes motion sickness:
