Alprazolam is indicated in the treatment of anxiety disorders . and should not be administered as a replacement for appropriate treatment of psychosis . however the way he  acts is not fully known.

Clinically, all benzodiazepines cause a dose-related depressant effect on the central nervous system, which can range from mild impairment in the performance of some tasks to sleep.

The appropriate dose will be determined by your doctor based on the severity of your symptoms and your response to treatment. The usual dose (see table) is sufficient for the needs of most patients. If higher doses are required, these should be increased carefully to avoid unpleasant reactions.

What is alprazolam used for?

Alprazolam is also used in the treatment of anxiety disorders associated with other conditions such as alcohol withdrawal. it is also indicated in the treatment of panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia, whose main feature is the unexpected anxiety crisis  , a sudden attack of intense apprehension, fear or terror.

This medication is also indicated in the treatment of anxiety disorders  associated with other manifestations, such as alcohol withdrawal, in the treatment of panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia (fear of being in open spaces or in a crowd), whose main characteristic is it is the unexpected panic attack, a sudden attack of intense apprehension, fear or terror.

Alprazolam Composition:

Each Alprazolam tablet:

Alprazolam _________________0,25 mg / 0,5 mg / 1 mg / 2 mg

Excipients _______________________________ 1 tablet

(Excipients: starch, sodium benzoate, sodium docusate, microcrystalline cellulose, twilight yellow lake dye, silicon dioxide, magnesium stearate, lactose monohydrate).

How to use alprazolam:

Each Alprazolam 0.5mg, 1.0mg and 2.0mg tablet contains the equivalent of 0.5mg, 1.0mg and 2.0mg of Alprazolam , respectively.

Use in children:

The safety and efficacy of alprazolam  in subjects under 18 years of age have not been established.

Use in elderly or debilitated patients:

It is recommended to use the lowest effective dose for elderly or debilitated patients to avoid excessive sedation or ataxia (see box).

Adult use:

The optimal dose of alprazolam should be individualized based on the severity of symptoms and individual patient response. In patients who require higher doses, these should be increased cautiously in order to avoid adverse reactions.

In general, patients who have not been previously treated with psychotropic medications will require lower doses than those previously treated with minor anxiolytics, antidepressants, or hypnotics.

Treatment duration:

The available data support the use of medication for up to 6 months for anxiety disorders and for up to 8 months in the treatment of panic disorders.

Discontinuation of treatment:

To discontinue treatment with Alprazolam , the dose should be reduced slowly, as per good medical practice. It is suggested that the daily dose of Alprazolam  be reduced by no more than 0.5 mg every 3 days. Some patients may require even slower dose reduction.

Use during pregnancy:

Data related to teratogenicity and effects on postnatal development and behavior after treatment with benzodiazepines are inconsistent.

There is evidence from some early studies with other members of the benzodiazepine class that in utero exposure may be associated with malformations. Furthermore, subsequent studies with drugs of the benzodiazepine class did not provide clear evidence of any type of defect.

There are descriptions of children exposed to benzodiazepines during the late third trimester of pregnancy or during delivery who had both floppy infant syndrome and neonatal withdrawal symptoms.

If alprazolam is used during pregnancy , or if the patient becomes pregnant while using this drug, she should be apprised of the potential harm to the fetus.

Alprazolam is a drug classified in pregnancy risk category D. Therefore, this medication should not be used by pregnant women without medical advice. The patient should immediately inform her physician in case of suspicion of pregnancy .

Alprazolam side effects:

Some of the side effects of alprazolam  can include constipation, depression , memory changes, anxiety , tremor, dizziness, drowsiness, loss of consciousness, lack of motor coordination, difficulty sleeping, headache , confusion, slowed speech and difficult to speak. dry mouth , nervousness, nausea , skin inflammation, extreme tiredness, irritability, blurred vision, decreased appetite, decreased libido or sexual impotence, feeling light-headed, changes in balance, or weight loss or gain.

Contraindications of alprazolam:

  • If you have ever had an allergic reaction to alprazolam , other benzodiazepines, or any component of the product’s formula, do not use this medication.
  • It should also not be used if you have myasthenia gravis (a disease of the nerves and muscles that results in muscle weakness) or acute narrow-angle glaucoma (increased pressure inside the eyes ).
  • This medication is contraindicated for anyone under 18 years of age.
