Therefore, adenoid is not a disease or a symptom. It is a way of protecting and defending the body against airborne particles, viruses and bacteria that accumulate in the nose and throat. Its greatest use is in early childhood, and it begins to grow at 2 years of age, having a growth peak between the third and fourth year and at 7 years of age it begins to regress, that is, to decrease in size.

Problems with adenoids arise when they grow too large and start to obstruct the passage of air through the nasal cavity. Large adenoids are popularly known as “spongy meat”. The correct medical term is adenoid hypertrophy and when there is inflammation it is called  adenoiditis . So, check out  Adenoiditis – What it is, Causes, Symptoms and Treatments:

Adenoiditis – What it is:  While adenoids (Spongy Nose Meat) play an important role in keeping a person healthy, as they age, adenoids become less important because their body is able to fight infections in other ways other than through the adenoids. In fact, adenoids often get smaller around the age of 5 or 6 and virtually disappear by adolescence.

Although Adenoids (Spongy Nose Meat) help to filter germs from your body, sometimes adenoids can become overwhelmed by bacteria and become infected. When this happens, the adenoids can also become inflamed and swollen. This condition is called Adenoiditis .

Causes of Adenoiditis (“adenoid”):  Normally, the adenoid and the other lymphoid organs of the oropharynx constitute a defense barrier against microorganisms, but if the attack on it is too aggressive, the adenoid itself can be infected. Most adenoid infections (  Adenoiditis ) are caused by viruses, but they can also be bacterial.

Symptoms of Adenoiditis:  The symptoms that something is not right with the adenoid depend on what problem it is having. In the case of   Adenoiditis , that is, when they increase in size, the main symptoms are:

  • snoring ;
  • Breathing through the mouth during the day and night;
  • Obstructive sleep apnea ;
  • Less control over the urinary system, having recurrent episodes of bed wetting;
  • Restless sleep;
  • Difficulty eating;
  • Agitation;
  • Irritability;
  • Nasal speech;
  • Low level of concentration;
  • Higher incidence of lung diseases and allergies.

Treatments for Adenoiditis:  Usually, Adenoiditis is resolved through antibiotics. However, if it is very frequent and if antibiotics are not working, or if there have been more serious respiratory problems, it is advisable to proceed with surgery to remove the adenoids (adenoidectomy).

Adenoidectomy is a simple surgery and must be performed by an otolaryngologist. Adenoids are removed through the mouth and no additional incision is required. Most patients can be discharged soon after recovery from the procedure.

After the surgical procedure, there may still be a little fever , sore throat or ear pain for a few days. It may be uncomfortable to eat and breathe through your mouth while your throat is swollen.
